What is SSL?
The Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) is a protocol that provides secure communication between client and server. Here the client is your browser and server is the web site you're communicating with. Secure communication has three main goals: privacy, message integrity, and authentication.
How SSL Works
Encrypted link is created by SSL between a web server and a web browser. This encrypted link ensures that all data passed between the web server and browser remains private and secure and is recognized by millions of consumers by a secure padlock which appears in their browser.
The SSL protocol is used by millions of e-Business providers to protect their customers ensuring their online transactions remain confidential.
In order to be able to use the SSL protocol, a web server requires the use of an SSL certificate. Certificates are provided by Certification Authorities (CA) who in most cases also offers additional products and services to aid e-Businesses to demonstrate that they are trustworthy
Why to Use SSL
The two main reasons for using SSL Certificate are
- You want to accept credit card payments on your website.
- You might have confidential information that you want to keep secure while it is being accessed via web.
SSL certificates also protect your passwords from being intercepted, when typed into a secure login page.
Do I need SSL Certificate
If you are accepting Credit cards payment online via website/merchant account. All the credit card associations and networks require that you use SSL whenever you transmit credit card information (such as card number, card holder's name, expiration date, CVV code, etc)i.e., whenever a customer enters their credit card on the shopping cart order form or payment page this is an important part of making your website follow PCI compliant(a set of rules that must be followed in order to accept credit card payments).
